An Update

Last Tuesday, Lew Lew really hurt himself.  It is still a bit of a mystery, but I have a working idea of what could have happened.  I got the vet out ASAP, and she said it was the worst laceration she had ever seen, but got it bandaged up to wait on a consult with the lead vet at our clinic as well as the 2 big surgical centers in NC.  To cut a long, not even close to finished story short, Lew severed one of the ligaments that run along the front of his hind cannon bone. He also tore out a fist-sized chunk of flesh that exposed many inches of bone.  I will write more about what we did and how I made the decisions, but basically, he had surgery on Thursday.  They were able to close the wound but not connect the ligament. He goes back for his first post-surgical follow-up today.  I don't really know what to expect as far as healing or scenarios at the moment, but he is happy to stand in his stall (drugged) and go for a hand graze, so I am praying that under that bandage, there is a still-closed leg.
