Erh Mer Gerhd!!

Cecil is doing so well with the trainer, who regularly comments that he is a lot like the few mustangs he works with - wicked smart and has no need for people.  His training started out very dramatic, but as Cecil has gotten with the program it has mellowed.

What even is life right now?
He leads, ties, picks up all feet, lunges, ponys, gives his hindquarters, goes through gates and crosses creeks.  I can't even!
How are we leading AND selfie-ing?
You still have to be very on your mental game because while Cecil now understands what he is supposed to do, he is not always sure he WANTS to do it. His trainer had me do about an hour of work loose in the round pen focusing on the following:

  1. Move his feet - he can choose not to be with us, but that means he has to work.
  2. Reward small trys - we want him to 'hunt us up' and softly follow - that means rewarding and backing out of the work BEFORE it becomes too much.
  3. Be quiet but not tentative - we can't walk on eggshells around him, he has to deal with people walking right into his space.

What closeness is this?

Depending on the weather, I may go back tonight.  Either way, he comes home Monday with a whole new set of skills we get to practice and a MUCH safer outlook on people and life.

I will be happy to see these ears every day again!

  1. I'm glad he's doing so well. I hope to see more posts about him as time goes on.
