Slowing down to speed up

It is this point in the year where everything feels like it is balanced on the edge of a precipice. Our show season kicks off on the 14th, it is almost time to get into the garden, 2nd-semester classes have their first report cards this week, and it is ALMOST spring.  Normally I fall into the habit of obsessively planning out every aspect of my life, shopping lists, project agenda, training rides, lesson plans, ect.  However, the unfinished state of the farm is forcing me into a more laidback approach to the start of the busy season.

Dutch has had some foot issues (not unusual) from a sprung shoe a few months ago. Hopefully, we have him all squared away, but he has nothing to prep for, so he is enjoying just being a fat wild man in the (not) pasture.

 I is too cute!

Uno has been going on more hacks.  We have a lovely little 2-mile road hack that takes up and down a few hills.  It has been really nice to enjoy just sitting on my horse with the sun on our back.  Our current workload is 1 lunge with side reins w - t, 1 hack, and at least 1 dressage school per week.  This is less serious work than we usually do, but his first event isn't until May.  Right now I am more focused on having a forward, happy, soft horse than a super fit one.  We have not jumped since our last lesson, but that is ok too.  We will go out and do dressage this weekend and see what is what.

We go down

We go up

The ears stay forward

The farm work inches onward.  While we are off at our show on Sat Magic Mike (our land guy) is going to start the rear driveway and barn pad.  Our goal for this 1/2 of the year is to get the pad and roof up, and then get electricity running in the barn.  We have picked up all the loose debris from clearing in the turnouts and have all our burn piles ready for the weekend.  Next week is calling for rain and 70 degrees, so we may plan some clover and grass as well.

Garden planning

Ours will be smaller - but this is phase one

This is phase 1000... haha.

All in all, Spring is close enough to taste but not actually here - the anticipation is killing me.

Even my in-law's ancient pup is feeling the spring.
